On the roads of the island of Rhodes (Greece), several thousand tourists flee. Families with sometimes babies in pushchairs. While the air is unbreathable, sometimes you have to walk for miles to get to safety. Some even left in swimsuits. Evacuations began on Saturday July 22, taking residents by surprise.

At the same time, the heavenly beaches are transformed into a giant pier. Tourists board boats in the middle of the night. Others manage to reach the airport, like this group of friends. “I saw myself dying, clearly. I was afraid for me, it was a bit every man for himself”testifies a French survivor.

30,000 people have been evacuated, but the fire is still progressing on the island. Flames that invite themselves even on the beaches and burn everything. AT Rhodes, solidarity is organized. The classrooms of a school have become dormitories, where the refugees prepare to spend another night.
