Twenty years after its ban, still nearly one in three schools in France contains asbestos. This is revealed by a survey carried out by France info and our colleagues from the program Vert de rage. Doubt persists in many establishments, such as Fraisans in the Jura.

Hubert Bacot, mayor of Fraisans (Jura), leads a town of 1,200 inhabitants. In the center of the village is the school, an old building which has been renovated several times. At the start of the 1950s, asbestos appeared to be a miracle product. Its anti-fire properties and its low cost mean that it is widely used in the construction industry. But in the establishment, the headmistress of the school asks questions. IThe ground is crumbling, she suspects the presence of asbestos.

7 out of 10 schools have a DTA

The teachers of the school have of course alerted several times without obtaining answers. “The workers who have been exposed to this have serious illnesses and it is difficult to recognize it. It’s because there are children so we would like to be sure that there is no risk”commented Isabelle Smagghe, director of the École des Forges. Schools should normally have a DTA, a technical asbestos diagnosis like a kind of logbook. But in reality, seven out of ten schools have this document.
