Air traffic slowed down on Thursday April 25 throughout France due to flight cancellations requested from airlines to deal with an air traffic controller strike. Some 2,300 flights departing from or arriving at a French airport are planned for the day, compared to nearly 5,200 the day before, according to the dashboard of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) consulted by the ‘AFP. Cancellations primarily concern short and medium-haul flights.

To match available staff and traffic, French civil aviation had asked companies to cancel 75% of flights departing or arriving from Paris-Orly, 55% at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, 65 % in Marseille-Provence and 45% on all other platforms in France.

Lifting of notice from majority union

For maintained flights, however, delays remain moderate, according to the DGAC. Orly airport is the most affected, with an average delay of 44 minutes on arrival and 26 minutes on departure. The announcement on Wednesday morning of an agreement to end the crisis by the main union, the SNCTA, had given rise to hope for a reduction in the constraints weighing on airlines.

This agreement, however, came too late to avoid disruption, especially since the three other air traffic controllers’ unions, Unsa-ICNA, Usac-CGT and Spac-CFDT, maintained their notice. Unions are protesting against an overhaul of French air traffic control and demanding compensation measures.
