(Saint-Hyacinthe) The City of Saint-Hyacinthe must pay the sum of $106,761 for having dumped nearly 8,500,000 liters of untreated municipal wastewater, causing the death of several thousand fish.
The incident dates back to June 28, 2016 when the City of Saint-Hyacinthe authorized the discharge of several million liters of untreated wastewater.
Added to a very low flow rate in the river, this spill would have led to the death of thousands of fish in the Yamaska River downstream from the Saint-Hyacinthe wastewater treatment plant. The municipality was thus found guilty of an infraction of the Environmental Quality Act.
In total, the amount claimed from the City includes a fine of $80,000 to which are added additional costs in the amount of $26,761.
