As the United Nations Security Council convened in an emergency in a desperate attempt to avert conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin decided to deploy his troops to southern Ukraine and bomb several targets soldiers across the country. The head of the Kremlin has an obsession: to bring Ukraine back into the bosom of Russia and to push back NATO. Former agent of the KGB (the secret services of the country), the Russian president would have the ambition to restore all its greatness to the Soviet Union whose fall is, in his words, “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the XXand century”.
Russian military action has been condemned for several hours by a large part of the international community. In France, the main Russian candidates condemn Vladimir Putin’s decision. “In these dark times for peace and for Europe, I express my solidarity and support with Ukraine and its people. We must react firmly to this unjustified and criminal act“said socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo on Twitter. Far-right presidential candidate Éric Zemmour”unreservedly condemns the Russian military intervention which began last night in Ukraine“, his team told AFP Thursday morning.
While the West denounces Russia’s decision to recognize the independence of breakaway regions in Ukraine, some nations have sided with Vladimir Putin. China sided with Moscow. During a speech, the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, announced that he respected the point of view of the Russian authorities. Bordering Ukraine and Russia, Belarus has chosen the side of Vladimir Putin. The president said his country would accompany its Russian ally in the event of a military attack. On Twitter, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs recalled Cuba’s “firm” opposition to “the expansion of NATO to the borders” of Russia, considered a “brother country”. Foreign Minister Faisal al-Meqdad said that Syria “supports the Russian decision”.
