The relationship between Prince Harry and his father King Charles III has not always been easy, starting even at the birth of William’s brother with unflattering remarks from his father. And yet, the monarch, son of the late Elizabeth II, was one of those who were quickly conquered by Meghan Markle, when she arrived in the royal family. He fell in love with his daughter-in-law because of their many common passions. So much so that Charles III had even considered offering a castle to the Sussex couple. This is indeed what Philip Kyle teaches us in his book Charles III (ed. Perrin).
After their wedding on May 19, 2018, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a public appearance during a garden party bringing together charities supported by the ex-Prince of Wales, Charles. This day, Harry pays a strong tribute to his father. “It’s your selfless will to change things […] that William and I inspire each other every day“, he says. A few weeks later, the Duke of Sussex and his wife then find King Charles III in the north of Scotland, at the castle of Mey. A property acquired by the Queen Mother in 1952, shortly after the death of her husband. They spent nearly a week there together, at the heart of a “green nature“.
The management of the castle and its domain
“It was even rumored that Charles would have liked Harry and Meghan take over the management of the castle and its domain upon his accession to the throne“, we learn in the work of Philip Kyle. This is one of the most unknown residences belonging to the British royal family. It is located in the former county of Caithness, about ten kilometers from the village of John o’ Groats which marks the northern end of the Highlands of Scotland. This castle was the favorite residence of Queen Mother Elizabeth. “The link between [Charles, Harry et Meghan] is very narrow“, had at that time entrusted a member of the royal family to Vanity Fair. It was the time when everything was going well across the Channel, and when Kate Middleton, Prince William, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were then nicknamed the Fab Four. But quickly, the tensions will then be felt in this quartet. And the two brothers thus decide to separate their cabinets. The idea of leaving this sublime castle of Mey in the hands of the Sussexes therefore never became public.
