A human tragedy takes place a few steps from his home: thousands of migrants are stranded in the cold on the Polish-Belarusian border. At least eight died after passing it. So Kamil shines a green light in the night to let them know that he can help them …
Thousands of migrants stranded in Belarus at the border and trying to cross to be able to settle in Europe … The country is currently going through a migration crisis. To cope, in Poland, there is Kamil who tries to welcome migrants who have managed to cross the border. Often, they find themselves in extremely difficult and totally destitute conditions: they do not have anything to eat, they do not have anything to warm up. Already eight have died on Polish territory. “They are not prepared for this kind of weather, unlike us, and they get cold every night, so they are permanently frozen. So even if the temperatures are above 0, they are in very bad conditions.“, explains Kamil Syller, lawyer and resident of Werstok.
We are in Werstok, a very small village a few minutes from the Belarusian border, and some locals have decided to put a green light on their porch. This tells the migrants who are in the forests and who are in absolute necessity, that they can come to these houses, find food, find something to warm up, charge their phones, etc. “They are so scared that they don’t want to be seen. It’s such a level of fear that they’d rather stay in the forest and wait, I don’t know, for death. They need a signal, a light signal, which is visible at night, because they move at night, so we put a green signal, which is the color of the aid.“, explains Kamil.
