Actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal offered Internet users a small preview of her second feature film on Thursday by posting photos of the main characters: Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, and Jessie Buckley, who plays the Bride.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is currently working on the film The Bride, which she directs, writes and produces. The story takes place in Chicago, in the 1930s. Because he feels alone, Frankenstein’s monster, helped by Dr. Euphronius, reinvigorates a murdered young woman – the Bride. “She goes beyond what either expected, sparking an explosive romance, police attention and a wild, radical social movement,” reads the synopsis.
Maggie Gyllenhaal surrounded herself with great actors to carry out her project. The leading role will be played by Irishwoman Jessie Buckley, nominated for an Oscar in 2022 for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s first film, The Lost Daughter. It is the Welsh actor Christian Bale – the Batman of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy – who plays Frankenstein’s monster. Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard (Maggie Gyllenhaal’s husband) and Annette Bening are also part of the cast.
The theatrical release of The Bride is scheduled for October 2025.
