“As revolting as they are, these facts are not an isolated case”, reacted on franceinfo Charlotte Mijeon, spokesperson for the Sortir du nuclear network, after the complaint lodged by an executive of the Tricastin nuclear power plant (Drôme) against EDF for “dissimulation” of the incidents. “We monitor incidents made public by the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) almost daily and this is only the tip of the iceberg”, adds Charlote Mijeon.
The complaint was filed for breaches of regulations relating to nuclear installations, the environmental code and labor law, endangering the lives of others and harassment. “The extremely late reporting of incidents to ASN is unfortunately a common occurrence., worries the spokesperson for Sortir du Nucléaire. For example, to come back to Tricastin, in 2017, EDF took more than four months to declare an earthquake failure fault on the dike above the power plant. “
“It calls into question the very principle of nuclear safety control in France, which is based on the declaration”, points out Charlotte Mijeon, indicating that it is up to the operator to report problems in good faith in due time, “the facts show this is not the case.”
“The very fact that ASN has decided to hire a person specializing in fraud detection is quite revealing.”

Charlotte Mijeon then fears that EDF is concealing information to help extend the life of the plants. “We know that a large part of the reactors is approaching the end of 40 years, but EDF considers for granted the extension up to 50 years which we can expect other cover-ups so as not to call into question these plans. “
