In 2011 with his brother Karim, the happy father of two children – who is very proud of his roots – set out to organize a colorful show in the heart of Marrakech!

Wanting to hit hard, the duo decided to broadcast it also on French television. For his exceptional show, Jamel Debbouze constantly calls on comedians he esteems and knows well. Add to that that stars also make surprise appearances on stage. But a few days before the launch of the first edition of its flagship show, a terrible tragedy will shake Morocco.

On April 18, 2011, an attack was committed at the Argana café, one of the busiest in Jemâa El-Fna square. 17 people will thus lose their lives in addition to the 20 injured. For Tele-Leisure in 2022, Jamel Debbouze returned to this tragic event that he will never forget: “All the artists were afraid to come, but my friends followed me, like Gad Elmaleh, Omar Sy, Florence Foresti and Zinedine Zidane”.

“This act is horrible…”

A painful memory that will haunt him forever as he indicated on the airwaves ofEuropean 1 in 2011 : “I was appalled, devastated. This act is horrible. Especially since you cannot fight against invisible enemies. They are cowards, who strike like traitors and who do not give us the opportunity to listen and move forward “. And to clarify, not without emotion: “The Argana is the café where I go most often, it’s where I take all my friends. My brother was there fifteen minutes before the explosion. Obviously that upset me. “.

Despite his concerns, Jamel Debbouze wanted to go to the end of his project: “If I had canceled this festival, I would have blamed myself. I want to continue to make people laugh and change mentalities”, clarified the main interested party. And to emphasize: “Even if it may seem pretentious. It’s not a question of trust or not in Morocco. I come from this country, it is the Moroccans who have allowed me in a certain way to write my story […]”.
