A warm handshake and a few words exchanged on the corner of the table. On the occasion of a screening of his film which marked the 90s, and a presentation of his musical comedy project, Hate: so far nothing has changed, Mathieu Kasssovitz, came simply to talk about youth, politics and the suburbs in the Estaque district of Marseille. Themes dear to the director of Hate.

“We started from the principle that the institutions were not interested in us, says a resident whose hair is just starting to turn gray. He was probably a teenager or young adult in 1995 when the film Hate was released in theaters. We had no place to express ourselveshe continues, so we created the events, the festivals ourselves.”

Soak up life in the cities

“We, when we are in Paris and we watch television and we see BFM, for us the Marseille cities are the worst cities in France, they are the most dangerous, they are the most dilapidated, replies Mathieu Kassovitz. What you’re telling me is that people actually look pretty good at 95%.”

Elected officials and associations from the Estaque district also discover the faces of the three actors selected to play the roles of Saïd, Vinz and Hubert in the musical Hate, inspired by the eponymous film. Three actors chosen after a long casting process in the fall of 2023. Alivor, rapper from Le Havre, will perform the role of Hubert on stage. Samy Belkessa and Alexander Ferrario, respectively Saïd and Vinz, come from the Paris suburbs. For them too, it is about immersing themselves in life in the cities of Marseille.

“Each city has its own specificities so it’s important to see life in Marseille’s neighborhoods”testifies Alivor. “We can have, through eyes and stories, realities that are outside of what we know, even if we too still have things to tell, that’s just something more”continues Alexander Ferrario.

Everyone will recognize themselves, all the guys from the suburbs will recognize themselves and everyone who wants to feel recognized will be recognized.

In 1995, when Mathieu Kassovitz directed Hate, this is the first time that working-class neighborhoods have been highlighted. In his future musical, almost 30 years later, the 56-year-old actor and director wants to go further. “The neighborhoods have their voice, they don’t need us to express themselves, he explains. We use the film in a more universal way. It’s not really about police blunders, it’s about the respect that young people need.”

The trailer for the show, revealed a few days ago on Instagram, takes place in the Parisian metro. We see the three actors running on the quays with on the walls, the poster of the musical entitled Hate, nothing has changed.

Hate: so far nothing has changed will be performed at the Dôme de Marseille in November, with hip-hop, comedy but above all rap. The tour is planned in three major cities in France: from October 10 to 19, 2024 at the Seine Musicale in Paris; from November 8 to 10, 2024 at the Dôme in Marseille; from November 15 to 17, 2024 at the LDLC Arena in Lyon.
