At least thirteen people were killed and dozens injured on Sunday February 6 in a bus accident on the island of Java in Indonesia. The driver of the tour bus carrying 47 people from Sukoharjo, central Java, for a stay at the seaside, lost control of his vehicle in a descent, said policemen. The bus overturned and hit the side of the road.
“Witnesses said they saw the driver panic as he tried to operate the gear lever, suggesting that the brake was not working or was faulty”, Bantul district police chief told a press briefing. The driver is among those who died. “Some on the spot and others died in hospital, while 34 others were injured,” he specified. Road accidents are frequent in Indonesia, due to the dilapidated state of vehicles and infrastructures, and to a code of the road that is often very little respected by drivers.
