Thieves take advantage of man’s drowning to steal his belongings

Heartless thieves would have taken advantage of the commotion caused by the drowning of a man in the middle of his honeymoon to take to their heels with the wallets, cell phones and the keys to the car rented by the couple.

“As if it couldn’t be worse,” a relative of the couple lamented, recounting the events in a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign, which reached nearly $40,000 on Wednesday.

On June 1, Steven Phan, 49, reportedly struggled while scuba diving alongside his new wife Brittany, who had been married for just three months, in Hawaii, according to the BBC. Wednesday.

But if several witnesses would then have rushed to bring assistance to the drowning man, others would have rather taken advantage of the commotion to clear off with the keys of the rented car, the wallets, the cell phones as well as the clothes of the couple.

After being brought back to shore to practice first aid, the 40-year-old from San José, California, unfortunately died of drowning in hospital.

His funeral was held Monday and Tuesday.
