Thiers and the Valley of spinning wheels

Every weekend, find the routes of Sylvain Pasdeloup. Between landscape recommendations and experiences, it is full of ideas and energy to make us love and rediscover the Auvergne region.

The knife capital of the world, Thiers

If there is a city in the Puy-de-Dôme in which it goes up and down, it is Thiers! Thiers is located within the territory of Livradois-Forez… I suggest a route of only 9km but for 650m of elevation all the same, which will partly follow the course of the Durolle, on the heights of the city of Thiers. A playful itinerary that shows a beautiful part of the identity of this city like no other.

On the program, therefore, a course for adventurers… the most adventurous among you will enjoy the many winding singles of the route. Departure from rue Saint-Roch and very quickly you gain altitude and after a few short kilometers of path the panorama opens up over the magnificent Thiers, the Livradois and the Chaîne des Puys in the distance! We are then close to the Mont des Margerides.

A heritage meeting

We will then play for a while with this river, the Durolle by crossing it then following it to a particularity of Thiers, the spinning wheels and the valley of the same name. It is here that the craftsmen, the grinders, worked lying down and adjusted the edge of their famous blades, the famous Thiers knives. A real chance to discover this unique heritage while running and doing good!

Beware of the final descent… It is quite steep indeed, it is done on the road. A descent which therefore closes this route. 9 km therefore and a good sequence for the calves and thighs. Again at his own pace of course.
