“This is the first time that we have had a president who has decided to be both president of the Commission but also head of the conservative party list”, underlines Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, on France Inter and franceinfo TV, Sunday March 24. Candidate for her own succession as President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen has been designated as “Spitzenkandidatin” of the European People’s Party (EPP).
THE “Spitzenkandidat”, in the feminine form, can be translated as “head of the list” and designates the system according to which the big political families present a candidate to lead their European campaign with a view to leading the Commission if they emerge victorious.
We will have to manage this situation “with great rigor”, insists Thierry Breton, who claims to be on the “same line” than Emmanuel Macron. The president reaffirmed his opposition on Friday during a press conference. According to Thierry Breton, the president of the Commission must be “neutral”, “above parties” and “country” specifying that it is a “ascertainment” and not of a “critical”.
