“Seeing all the money I spent, it is sure that I would have canceled my trip if I had known, even without cancellation insurance,” says Geneviève Perras.
She and her partner, Patrick Dolan, were due to return from their week-long trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on December 28. They had left despite the government’s recommendation to avoid all non-essential travel.
However, COVID-19 was invited into their stay, which did not end until Sunday afternoon.
“We are very exhausted”, expresses Mme Perras, an employee at Quebecor who expected her trip to allow her to rest instead.
While the couple claim they were cautious, that did not prevent Mr Dolan from receiving a positive result on December 26.
The situation turned into a puzzle when Geneviève Perras saw that she had symptoms too, while receiving negative results. The positive test finally fell on January 3.
The hotel doctor then convinced them to pay more than $ 400 for a medical certificate certifying that they had isolated themselves long enough since the first symptoms, ie 12 days.
“I ran out of medication for my thyroid gland and my mother was at the end of her life. I had to go ”, relates Mme Perras.
However, once at the airport, access to the plane was refused to them despite medical certificates. And their hotel didn’t want to accept them again.

The couple eventually took a flight to New Jersey after receiving negative results on a rapid test, which the United States is asking for.
The duo returned home Sunday crossing the border on foot, after taking an Uber from Burlington.
Their $ 4,800 trip will ultimately cost them over $ 9,000.
“Wait a bit [avant de voyager], implores Geneviève Perras. It can tumble quickly after [si vous attrapez la COVID-19]. “
