“These ultra-right factions have no place in the Republic”, insists on franceinfo Tuesday November 28 Olivier Véran, government spokesperson after Gérald Darmanin’s announcement. The Minister of the Interior announced on France Inter that he will “propose the end of the small group Division Martel” and of “two others” small far-right groups, after the xenophobic punitive expedition carried out last weekend in Romans-sur-Isère (Drôme).

Of the “extremely serious facts”, denounces Olivier Véran. All the more “that there continued to be attempts to bring together ultra-right factions in the Drôme.” The government spokesperson assures that this is not a doom and gloom because participating in an action carried out by a dissolved small group is “an aggravating factor before the courts”. Then, continues Olivier Véran, “you are leading an organization that could otherwise become more structured.”

“We must all firmly and uncompromisingly condemn this violence committed by the ultra-right,” calls the government spokesperson while the president of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, has been accused of not condemning this xenophobic punitive expedition in the Monnaie district of Romans-sur-Isère. The person concerned denies this, assures that he “sentenced” but he refused to “put on the same level” the death of Thomas and the action of these ultra-right activists.

“There is the desire to create the idea that there would be two Frances which would be destined to oppose each other, to wage war against each other : the France of cities and the other France”, deplores Olivier Véran. This “this idea is supported by the extreme right which by definition generalizes insecurity to an entire community. The ultra-right goes much further by organizing punitive expeditions with the aim of harming and even, why not, killing “he adds.

Beware of the risk of “societal tipping”

As during his trip to Crépol, the village where young Thomas was fatally stabbed, the government spokesperson warns against “the risk of society tipping over”. He develops his thoughts: “The shift of society would mean considering that the law of retaliation should prevail over justice in a rule of law. This would mean considering that there would no longer be any national cohesion possible and that it would now be necessary to to wage war.”

Olivier Véran swears that “all politics” led by Emmanuel Macron and the various governments for six years “goes against this idea of tipping point”. He underlines that 238 new gendarmerie brigades will be created in rural areas, including one “about twenty kilometers from Crépol to restore security”.

The spokesperson also states that “the justice of our country is firm”. But, he adds, “you also have to be able to say things” that is to say he “There exists in a certain number of neighborhoods of our cities an active, violent, arrogant minority, with a spirit of impunity and which first sows terror in the neighborhoods themselves, taking the population hostage”. This minority “sometimes this violence extends into city centers, causing news items that sometimes make the front page of the press.” This violence can “now also affect rural areas, which creates additional trauma.”

Olivier Véran ensures “which we are doing everything in our power to restore” the republican order. For that, “thousands of additional police officers are in police academy to restore blue.”

“Where in a big city there was a car from the Bac (Anti-Crime Brigade) in the middle of the night to deal with the violence, there are now five or six, there will be even more later. ‘future.”

“We have modified the penal code on minors to take into account the evolution of the threat since violence can be carried out by minors”welcomes Olivier Véran.

The government spokesperson sends the left back to back, “who refuses to name this insecurity for what it is and it adds to people’s unhappiness”and the extreme right “who would want us to believe that, because you come from a neighborhood and because your surname corresponds to the surname of those who sow insecurity, you would be placed in the camp of this France that we would have to fight”. Olivier Véran “contest” these two positions.
