Thetford Mines | One million contraband cigarettes seized, five arrests

(Thetford Mines) Five sixty-year-olds were arrested Wednesday in Thetford Mines, in Chaudière-Appalaches, during police searches which led to significant seizures.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) specifies that its police officers from the Contraband Investigation Department intervened in four residences and a car, which allowed them to seize nearly a million contraband cigarettes. They also seized nearly $10,000 in Canadian currency and a car considered to be illegal property.

The five people arrested are four men and a woman, aged between 60 and 67 years old.

The police operation was part of the ACCES Tabac program (Concerted Actions to Counter Underground Economies), which aims to counter the illegal tobacco trade, promote the integrity of the Quebec tax system and restore the order in the tobacco trade sector.
