The department of Creuse is particularly affected by medical desertification, but the arrival of new practitioners gives hope to the inhabitants. A dozen have settled in less than five years.

Maryne Mortier is an intern in the 7th year of medicine. For six months, she has been walking the roads of the Creuse alongside Doctor Landos, in order to make home visits. During the visits, the young intern also discovered the department, and fell in love with the region. “The kindness of the people is really pleasant. I find that there is a sense of welcome here. I never felt like a stranger when I had just arrived”she says.

Today, she shares her last day with her internship supervisor, Claude Landos, general practitioner at La Celle-Dunoise (Creuse) for 36 years. At 69, he would like to retire for two years, but cannot find a replacement. The arrival of a new generation of doctors delights him, but does not reassure him completely. “Will we have enough doctors, it’s not sure”he worries.

Particularly affected by the decline in medical demography, Creuse launched a health plan in September 2020, which includes an end-of-study scholarship, settling-in assistance, a discovery stay and an internet communication campaign.
