Real estate rental: these lessors with excessive, even illegal, demands
Faced with the high demand for rentals compared to the limited supply on the market, some owners believe they can do anything, even if it means flirting with illegality.
(France 2)
Faced with the high demand for rentals compared to the limited supply on the market, some owners believe they can do anything, even if it means flirting with illegality.
In France, many people are looking for accommodation, but few properties are for rent. So, to rent their accommodation, some owners set demanding, or sometimes even illegal, conditions. Refusals of files due to profession, and even due to eating habits.
Some ads are illegal
How do these landlords try to impose their rules outside of any legal framework? Thomas Jay, a student, paid the price. Each time he visited apartments, the young man came up against the demands of the owners. “I was asked to provide proof that my guarantor can pay four times the rent”he confides, adding, “I come from a modest family, my parents can’t”. Thomas then asked the State to act as guarantor, the visa guarantee for students and the most precarious. Again, this is not enough.
A refusal that the student considers as a “injustice”, but which is not illegal. However, some advertisements do not comply with the law. As required, three months’ security deposit, instead of two for furnished accommodation. Or, strictly non-smoking accommodation.
