This is one of the sectors identified by France Stratégie, an analysis body attached to the Prime Minister, the successor to the Planning Commission, as being the most promising for the years to come. Nearly 350 million tonnes of waste are produced each year in France. Almost 120 million tonnes are not recycled and that must change. The government has launched a plan endowed with 370 million euros to boost the entire recycling sector, from product design to collection, through the sorting of waste and the incorportation of these raw materials into new products.

These trades do not attract. There is clearly a shortage of candidates at all levels, from the least qualified trades linked to collection and sorting to engineering positions, which are in competition with other sectors of the economy, which enjoy of a better image.

However, new professions are emerging as waste diagnostician, one of these new professions, but also that of scheduler in sorting centers: “This is a person who is in charge of optimizing the flow of resources to sorting centers. We have a lot of inputs and outputs of resources and raw materials. So the scheduler is there to organize this flow of resources there. ” underlines Marième Diagne, of France Strategy. There are needs everywhere in France, recruitment everywhere is considered difficult, so there are places to take, especially among technicians and engineers. Wages, inevitably, are moving upward. These professions are still very masculine, but are becoming feminized at the same time as they are becoming more complex.
