these images that television channels are not allowed to broadcast

This Monday, September 19, 2022, the whole world followed the funeral of Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey. Television stations around the world have changed their schedules to broadcast what many are already calling “The funeral of the century”. It must be said that many heads of state and leaders had made the trip to pay a last tribute to the most famous sovereign on the planet. After a state funeral and an incredible procession in London, the remains of the monarch arrived aboard the royal hearse and under military escort in Windsor, a town located about forty kilometers west of the capital where Meghan and Harry had married and where the Queen had been residing since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many images are already in the memories of many onlookers and viewers. We note in particular the presence of the first two children of Kate and William. If Charlotte and George were impeccable and solemn inside Westminster Abbey, the daughter of the princely couple finally broke down. Surrounded by her loved ones, Louis’ big sister wiped away big tears as she left the funeral.

If many observers captured this moment of emotion, the television channels do not, in reality, have the right to show all they want of this ceremony. A very strict protocol applies to the media. Guest on France Info, Caroline Hick, international editorial manager of RTBF (in Belgium), explained: “There are restrictions imposed by the Palace and the British Royal Family. It is verbatim written that it is forbidden to show the ‘visible grief’ of the royal family. So if Harry is crying, well we can’t show it. The palace can identify images that it will ban from broadcasting, thereafter, and forever“, then adding: “It must be explained that we do not agree with these restrictions which prevent us from using the images which we receive, such as we estimate that we can use them“.
