The energy crisis should have no impact on the operation of the SNCF. “There is no government request to SNCF to have fewer trains or trains that run slower to save energy”, assured, Sunday, September 11, on franceinfo and France Inter the Minister of Transport Clément Beaune. However, the company aims to reduce its energy consumption by 10% by 2024.

“It would be totally paradoxical and contradictory to tell the SNCF that to save energy, you have to run fewer trains or run trains slowersaid the Minister. If we want people to take their car less often and take the metro, bus and train more, we need quality transport.

Clément Beaune acknowledges, however, that “the management of the company must make an effort” in terms of energy consumption – it uses between 1% and 2% of the annual electricity consumption in France each year. The Minister cites, for example, a drop in “air conditioning and heating in the offices”. He also cites eco-driving in order to adapt the driving of trains ecologically without lowering the speed. “These are things that do not reduce the activity of the public rail service but which also allow energy savings”he finishes.
