there will be no catch-up on bills in 2023, assures Bruno Le Maire

The “tariff shield” on electricity will not result in a “catch-up” on bills next year despite a need for additional funding of around 2 billion euros to implement this measure, said Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire. In the morning, the CLCV had warned that the tariff shield for this year could only be a “mirage”. Based on a recent deliberation by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the consumer association had mentioned a probable price catch-up of +8% next year on electricity.

“I want to be very clear with our compatriots, there will be no catch-up on their electricity bill. French consumers will not see any catch-up linked to this need for financing on their bill in 2023“, replied Bruno Le Maire.

Limit the rise in electricity bills to 4% this year, as committed by the government, will however cost more than expected, conceded the minister, specifying that‘”there will be a need for additional financing in 2023″, “of the order of 2 billion euros”, because “electricity prices have rather moved upwards”. This extension “will be financed by the finance bill that we will examine at the start of the next school year, next October, for 2023”, he continued in front of reporters.

“We want to continue to protect the French against the increase in electricity and gas prices“, he assured then that purchasing power is a campaign issue 12 days before the first round of the legislative elections. The Minister of the Economy did not detail further, believing that it was too early : “I’ll meet you at the start of the 2022 school year when we will examine the finance bill”, he concluded.
