“There is only Gabriel Attal left in this country who is for the level groups” in college, denounces, on franceinfo Thursday March 14, Sophie Vénétitay, general secretary of SNES-FSU, national union of secondary school teachers. The head of government maintained, on Wednesday, his desire to set up level groups in French and mathematics. He wants these small groups to be “Rule” and that entire classes are “the exception”.

For Sophie Vénétitay, the Prime Minister “governs against teachers and against the interests of the school”. “We have the feeling that Gabriel Attal is completely disconnected from reality”says the trade unionist, wondering if there is “another pilot on the plane”. Statements by the former Minister of National Education “are perceived as a form of provocation”she reports. “There has been a very strong mobilization against level groups for a month and a half, teachers are against, parents are against, school heads are against, inspectors are against”, continues the general secretary of SNES-FSU. The Minister of National Education, Nicole Belloubet, announced last Thursday a “relaxation” in the establishment of these groups, evoking “need groups” rather than “level groups”.

Risk of “stigmatizing” students

For the union leader, “working in a small group is a good thing, but working in a small group with students who have different levels to stimulate them and help them succeed better”. She believes that the establishment of level groups will “sort the students”, “lock them in their results” And “stigmatize them”.

The SNES-FSU calls to join the strike on Tuesday March 19 to “defense of the public service”notably the defense of public schools.
