Farmers are demanding a reduction in environmental standards. But according to EELV MEP David Cormand, interviewed on the 12/13 info set, the opposition between agriculture and ecology has no reason to exist.

The question of the opposition between agriculture and environmental standards is growing, while some farmers feel singled out. “The attack on ecological standards which would prevent our agriculture from prospering (…) is very old”explains David Cormand, EELV MEP. “But there is no agriculture without ecology. And above all, we have the wrong opponent”he says. “The problem in agriculture is not environmental standards, but the free trade standards negotiated, defended and hand-signed by the FNSEA”he continues.

Free trade standards in question

According to David Cormand, “upstream of the agricultural model, there are people who prosper from selling phytosanitary products. Downstream, there are those who capture the added value who are the agri-food giants and mass distribution.” Thus, the farmers are “sandwiched between unfair competition and customers who have power over food prices.” The MEP also calls on the government to “implement the Egalim law” supposed to protect farmers.
