“Controls [de police] are one of the elements of this explosive context”says Claire Hédon in an interview with the Parisian. After the death of 17-year-old Nahel, killed by a police officer during a traffic check, the Defender of Rights wishes more “trace these checks”. Because today, a young person who is controlled and considers himself to be a victim of discrimination has no means of recourse”she continues.

Claire Hédon believes that this fuels “mistrust, distrust, frustration and a deleterious climate between the police and the population”. It also recalls that a judgment of the Court of Cassation, which dates back to November 2016, definitively acts that a “control based on physical appearance is discriminatory and gross negligence”.

The English example

In this interview at Parisianthe Defender of Rights cites the operation of the British police as an example: the police must justify each arrest with an objective reason and give the person arrested a document summarizing all the facts, so that they can report a problem, if necessary .

Finally, Claire Hédon says to expect a report from the Court of Auditors by the end of the year, which she has entered on the subject. The Council of State, seized for its part by six NGOs two years ago, must also decide on this subject.
