“There is always work to be done in terms of remuneration”said the Minister of National Education, Nicole Belloubet, on Franceinfo on Tuesday, July 9, while 3,185 positions open in 2024 have not been filled in the public and private teaching competitions, according to figures published Monday by the ministry.

If the minister highlighted the latest salary increases, almost 200 euros net for teachers at the start of their career, a “revaluation that deserved to be done”, She acknowledges that there is still work to be done in mid-career. However, she felt that “Remuneration was not the only factor of attractiveness.” According to Nicole Belloubet, the “complexity of the teaching profession” is a “factor that comes into play” in the ongoing teacher recruitment crisis.

One of the avenues mentioned by the minister to alleviate this crisis is to bring forward the competitive examinations to the end of the third year of the degree for future primary school teachers and those in middle and high schools. “The attractiveness of recruitment competitions as we design them seems to me to be an extremely positive factor”stressed Nicole Belloubet. “I hope, in the coming days, to be able to publish a text, we are currently awaiting the opinion of the Council of State on this text which will put the recruitment of teachers at the level of the license with two years which will then be paid for obtaining a master’s degree and which will gradually allow them to enter the career”she explained.
