The summer of 2021 has certainly not been as hot as the previous ones, but global warming has not slowed down. Météo France has taken stock of the year, and 2021 will be one of the ten hottest years on record in the world.

In 2021, the months went by without looking alike. Unexpected and violent weather phenomena hit different regions of France. “We can qualify 2021 as a year close to normal, but with a lot of contrasts when we look in more detail. A year probably of respite in climate change compared to what we should experience in the coming years”, explains Matthieu Sorel, of Météo France.

The late frost in April thus compromised the harvests in the vineyards and orchards. Violent thunderstorms and floods ravaged the Gard, or more recently the South-West. Finally, the sand of the Sahara came to cover the south-east of the country with an ocher tint. However, the cumulative precipitation is in line with annual norms. Despite a rainy summer, temperatures were 0.2% higher than the average for the past 30 years. However, this increase is significantly lower than the European and global readings of 2021. The world is therefore always warmer.
