After the death of the queen, Thursday, September 8, the marks of homage and respect have multiplied in the four corners of the planet.
Purple, symbol of the monarchy, and silver, color of the 70 years of reign of Elizabeth II. In New York, the Empire State Building lights up to pay homage to the Queen. In Washington, it is the national cathedral which rings its bells 96 times to recall the age of the monarch. The American President even came to sign the embassy’s condolence book in person. “I had the chance to meet her before her death, she was an incredibly dignified and respectable woman”says Joe Biden.
The former territories of the British Empire, united within the Commonwealth, are also in mourning. In Australia, the Sydney Opera House displays the portrait of its monarch. In New Zealand, in Auckland, the traditional Maori dance, the haka, is performed in tribute. In Wellington, 96 cannon shots are fired. The residents are moved. “She had an incredible impact on our country”. Around the world, flags are lowered to half-mast, like in Canada, where the Prime Minister is struggling to hold back his tears. The whole planet displays its sadness.
