“Our inability to guarantee peace, fight climate change and revive international finance is harming development”, declared the UN Secretary General on Friday June 28. By unveiling the latest assessment of progress made on the 17 sustainable development goals adopted in 2015 by the United Nations, Antonio Guterres estimated that “the world is failing” in this mission. “We need to accelerate action on the Sustainable Development Goals, and we have no time to lose: only 17% of the goals are on track”he added during a meeting in New York (United States).
Among these few signs of hope, the UN Secretary-General cited the reduction in new HIV infections, growing access to the Internet and the use “booming” renewable energies.“We must increase the lending capacity of development banks to provide more resources for climate action and sustainable development”called Antonio Guterres.
Among other goals, member states have committed to improving access to clean water and ending extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. Wars in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, increasing climate disasters and the rising cost of living, among others, are preventing these goals from being achieved.
But “The failure to meet the basic needs of so many people is outrageous and inexcusable,” said Antonio Guterres, adding that it is necessary to bring peace to the conflicts raging across the world and to make efforts towards an ecological transition.
