An aboriginal woman seated next to natitas (human skulls) at the General Cemetery in La Paz on Tuesday as Bolivia celebrates the annual Natitas festival. During the celebration, thousands of Bolivians venerate human skulls, sometimes those of their relatives, decorating them with flowers, hats and candles; they then keep them at home for the rest of the year. According to Andean tradition, skulls have the power to watch over those who take care of them.
