A Besoto shepherd, a Bantu people of southern Africa, tends his flock in Semonkong, a community in Lesotho established in 1880 to act as a refuge during gun warfare. This conflict, which lasted from 1880 to 1881, pitted the Besotos against British forces in the Cape Colony, now part of South Africa.
