In 2018, wood from the Chartreuse forest (Isere) received a controlled designation of origin. With this AOCthe economic sector is recovering.
Chartreuse Forest (Isere) covers almost half of the Chartreuse massif. Largely made up of spruce and fir trees, trees are regularly cut down to exploit these natural resources. The trees to be removed are carefully designated and marked. Never are not carried out of clean cuts, which scar the forest. “Every 15 years, 15 to 20%which leaves a continuous forest cover”, explains Norbert Debroizehead of ONF Chartreuse.
Four years ago, the wood of Chartreuse was classified AOC. It is the first non-edible product to obtain this label. In a sawmill in the massif, the volume of wood and sales increase, while everywhere else in France establishments of the same type are disappearing. A success due in particular to the quality of the wood, and its sale in a short circuit. Today, nearly a thousand inhabitants of the Chartreuses live from the timber industry.
