In the township of Alexandra, South Africa, the residents of this women’s shelter live huddled in filth. And the fear of aggression is omnipresent.
Initially built to house the black workers of the capital during apartheid, the buildings of the Helen-Joseph hostel are in very poor condition today and have only been housing women and children for several decades. The tenants live there in the greatest destitution and fear of crime.
