(Los Angeles) The Woman Kinga historical epic about female warriors from a West African kingdom battling slave traders, ruled the US box office this weekend.

For its release, the Sony film which depicts the real life of the warriors of the kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century – located in present-day Benin – garnered 19 million dollars in revenue, according to provisional figures from the firm Exhibitor Relations published on Sunday.
Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis plays Nanisca, a seasoned warrior who trains the next generation of recruits tasked with fighting against a rival larger African kingdom and European slave traders.
In an interview with AFP on Wednesday, the actress explained that she spent six years trying to convince reluctant studios and producers to bet on the project.
The feature film largely stole the show at Barbariana low-budget horror flick that topped the box office last week and landed in second place this week, grossing $6.3 million from Friday to Sunday.
On the third step of the podium, the strange and bloody Pearl. Ti West’s film, which is all about farm stays, cinematic ambitions, axes, pitchforks and alligators… raked in just over $3.1 million for its release.
Then comes See How They Run, Searchlight’s comedy set in 1950s London, where the adaptation of a play is interrupted by a series of murders, which a slightly tipsy detective and his overly passionate assistant try to solve. The film also earned some $3.1 million in revenue.
In fifth place ranks Bullet Trainan action film starring Sony’s Brad Pitt, with $2.5 million.
