Camargue: the winter meeting place of pink flamingos
Camargue: the winter meeting place of pink flamingos – (France 2)
The Camargue is known for its marshes, its herds and its pink flamingos. The place is always magical and takes on a particular charm in winter. This is also a good time to admire the famous pink flamingo courtship parade.
The breath of winter pushes pink flamingos to the Pont de Gau ornithological park (Bouches-du-Rhône) every year. When the thermometer goes back down, the pink flamingos meet there. These iconic birds are at home here. From November to March, 1,500 to 2,000 pink flamingos gather on these sixty hectares of nature, designed to accommodate them in the best conditions. For Frédéric Lamouroux, director of the ornithological park, winter is the best time to observe these birds: “In winter, they are in optimal color, they are bright pink.”
5,000 km to find a partner
Ducks come from Siberia and Scandinavia. They traveled more than 5,000 km to enjoy the gentleness of the Camargue. “These birds arrive single and leave coupled. Being in a flock like that, a little tight, can work like a dating club”laughs Frédéric Lamouroux.
