The extreme cold will be felt throughout Quebec, where the mercury will reach abyssal depths on Tuesday between minus 38 and minus 42 degrees.
Environment Canada issued alerts on Monday that will be in effect throughout the province, except on the Bas-Saint-Laurent and the Gaspé.
In the metropolitan area, the federal agency predicts a wind chill of nearly minus 38 degrees for Tuesday morning, as temperatures hover between minus 16 and minus 20 degrees on Monday.
On the other hand, the sun will be there for Montreal and its surroundings, according to forecasts from Environment Canada, forecasting elsewhere an alternation of sun and clouds.
The same conditions will prevail in Beauce, the Côte-Nord and the Quebec region.
In Gaspésie and Anticosti Island, snow squalls will precede the arrival of the cold front on Monday morning, while visibility will be reduced due to blowing snow caused by strong winds.
Travel will be particularly difficult and dangerous due to a sudden change in weather conditions, the federal agency said.
For Wednesday, the freezing cold will give way to seasonal temperatures in most areas with a mercury oscillating between minus 6 and minus 4 degrees.
