In Ukraine, anger and concern mingle for the thousands of inhabitants, victims of the destruction of the dam. 17,000 people have already been evacuated, while the water continues to rise, particularly in the city of Kherson.

In the streets of Kherson, Ukrainians are at work in what they have learned to master: resourcefulness and solidarity. Faced with rising waters, there is an urgent need to evacuate those who are trapped. This woman arrives barefoot, with just a few things. “It’s horrible, my whole neighborhood is under water. We went upstairs”, she says. “We spent the night on the 3rd floor, because the water had reached the 2nd floor”, continues another resident. Wednesday, June 7 in the morning, there was no artillery fire from the Russian forces. This made it easier for rescuers to act.

The peak will be reached in the next few hours

The inhabitants have rage in their stomachs. They have already had to deal with the Russian occupation for several months. “I’m angry, everyone is fighting because of the people who supposedly wanted to save us”notes a local resident. “Today some quarters of Kherson are unrecognizable. The peak of the rising waters should be reached in the next few hours”concludes Stéphanie Perez, journalist for France 2 in Kherson.
