A Russian court on Tuesday rejected the request for the release of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, confirming his pre-trial detention for “espionage”. The Biden administration, like his employer the “Wall Street Journal” denounce “an illegal arrest” and demand his release.

“Using our most powerful tool, journalism, to put Evan and his family first“, pleads the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper believes it is essential that people understand who Evan Gershkovich is and it is to this end that it published an interview with his family, parents and sister at the end of last week.

The American journalist was arrested for spying almost three weeks ago in Yekaterinburg in Western Siberia. At the end of a closed-door hearing on Tuesday April 18, the judge of a Russian court in Moscow decided to “leave unchanged” the detention order. This hearing nevertheless marks the first public appearance of the journalist since his arrest. His state of health was deemed good by the American ambassador to Russia, who visited him in prison the day before.

The Biden administration still denounces “unlawful arrest” and asks for his release, just like the wall street journalhis employer, very mobilized to free his correspondent in Moscow.

In the video posted on the website of the wall street journal, his mother Ella Milman recalls that her son has always considered it his duty to inform. “He likes Russians”, she assures. However, she admits that her son’s article on Vladimir Putin and the internal doubts in the Kremlin last December worried her a great deal. Nevertheless, Evan Gershkovich’s mother wants to stay positive, “it’s one of the American qualities that we have made our own, that of being optimistic!”, she says. But she adds “I’m not stupid, I understand what’s at stake, that’s what I choose to believe”.

THE wall street journal also published the equally optimistic handwritten letter, in Russian, sent by Evan to his family, and distributes badges “Free Evan – free evan” in the editorial staff.
