The Vosges prefecture authorized Monday April 15 by prefectural decree an experiment to reintroduce the capercaillie, France Bleu Sud Lorraine reported this Tuesday. This emblematic bird of the massif is endangered, notably due to global warming and the growth of tourism.
The project plans to “recover” forty animals in Norway. They will then be released on the massif. This system will then be renewed each year until 2029. “During the steering committees that we will hold, we will be able to know whether or not we are continuing or if it is a failure, in which case the situation would be very serious”indicates the prefect of the Vosges Valérie Michel-Moreaux.
This capercaillie reintroduction program is debated in the department. Two scientific councils have issued unfavorable opinions on this experiment, reports France Bleu Sud Lorraine. According to them, global warming no longer guarantees a favorable habitat for the animal.
