For the first time in a long time, the number of doctors is increasing in France. Some of them choose to settle in communities that are sorely lacking, which delights the residents. Report from Mauprévoir, in Vienne.

Since June, consultations have continued in the office of Laurent Gaudet, general practitioner in Mauprévoir (Vienna), a town of 600 inhabitants. After several months without a doctor, it’s a relief for the residents. “The schedule is loaded more and more every day with new patients, or patients who already had doctors but traveled miles to go to a consultation“, indicates Alicia Faugueroux, the medical secretary.

Laurent Gaudet has just completed his thesis. For his first position, he decided to settle in a village out of conviction. “It is to fill a medical gap which is still quite significant, and which will widen over the years.“, he says. He is an employee of the health center, financed by an association providing aid for rural areas. The initiative is welcomed by the entire village.
