Refusals to comply make headlines. Although they have not increased in number in recent years in France, they are nevertheless more violent, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

At high speed, a motorcyclist drives straight towards a municipal police officer while he was trying to stop him. The shock is violent. The policeman gets up and tries to intercept the driver, who flees. He will be arrested a few moments later. The scene was filmed by a passerby on Monday April 15 in front of a school in the northern suburbs of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin).

15,000 refusals to comply per year

In France, every 40 minutes, a police officer faces a refusal to comply, according to the police. Road checks which can turn into tragedy. An anonymous police officer recounts a check that went wrong. The driver of a vehicle that was almost stationary accelerated in his direction. “I was very scared and saw death straight away”, he says. He shot by “reflex” in order to “save your skin”. Today he talks about “miracle”. The driver was injured and the police officer quickly realized the seriousness of his action. Refusals to comply are not more numerous in recent years, but more violent, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Nearly 15,000 offenders are prosecuted each year for refusing to comply.
