The Swedish video game group Embracer announced on Thursday August 18 that it had reached an agreement to buy Middle-earth Enterprises, which notably holds the rights for products based on the sagas. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

With this acquisition, he will hold the rights to all products derived from Tolkien’s famous works: books, films, series, video and board games and other amusement parks… “I’m really glad that The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit join the Embracer family”welcomed in a press release Lars Wingefors, CEO and founder of the group.

Middle-earth Enterprises is a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, founded in 1976 by producer Saul Zaentz, Oscar winner for Best Picture for Flight over a cuckoo’s nest, Amadeus and The English Patient.

The Embracer Group also announced the acquisition of several game studios, including Tripwire Interactive and Tuxedo Labs. Previously known as THQ Nordic, Embracer had already announced in May the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix, three North American development studios behind successful games like tom raider and Deus Ex.

In its quarterly report also published on Thursday, Embracer reported a turnover of 7.1 billion crowns (about 671 million euros), more than double than in the same period last year.
