Stéphane Bonnifay, vice-president of the Var Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is under investigation for “organized gang destruction by means dangerous to people” and “participation in a criminal association”, franceinfo learned on Thursday August 29 from the Toulon public prosecutor’s office.
He is suspected of having participated in the arson attack on March 1, 2023, which took place in a waste disposal site operated by the Pizzorno company in Bormes-les-Mimosas. Seven garbage trucks were destroyed in the fire. Stéphane Bonnifay, 54, is the grandson of the founder of the Bonifay group, which specializes in construction materials and is very well established in the Var, explains France Bleu Provence.
In this case, six people are indicted, and all are placed in pre-trial detention. Stéphane Bonnifay is presented as the “sponsor of these facts” by several co-indictees. “He totally denies his responsibility”the prosecutor said.
The courts suspect Stéphane Bonnifay of having wanted to weaken one of his competitors, a key player in waste management and treatment in the Var department, reports France Bleu Provence.
