The value of the family doctor?

A bit of etymology to address this question. “Value” comes from Latin valere which meant “to be strong, to be valuable”.

So what is the value of the family doctor in our society? We could say from the outset that value depends on what we want to give to a person. Indeed, this scale of values remains fairly representative of reality.

Like reality, this valuation has changed over time. The older ones remember the good doctor Bouclier in The beautiful stories of the countries aboveor even the Dr Marchessault in Rue des Gables. Others remember the American TV series Doctor Marcus Welby. These good and dedicated family doctors reflected the value placed on them by our society at the time.

But what is their value today? Nowadays, it is hospital specialists who are elevated to the top ranks. We only have to think of TV series like Stat here or at New Amsterdamor to Dr. Gray among our neighbors.

In favor of large institutions, surgeries and other technological exploits, the role of family doctors seems to be sliding inexorably towards oblivion. And it is surprising that the number of family doctors is decreasing and that family medicine registrations in our universities are following the same path.

As a society, we must restore the image of family medicine as quickly as possible.

Let’s talk about these unsung heroes and probably in this way we will be able to resurrect these vocations which will bring us family doctors proud of their role in our society.
