In the midst of the energy crisis and while electricity costs are soaring, the University of Strasbourg has chosen to close the doors of its buildings for two more weeks in winter. The management hopes to save money on its energy bill.
Next winter, the campus of the University of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) should be empty for two weeks. The management decided to close the building to lower the heating bill. “It’s the best solution to earn the 10% energy savings that the government is asking us to earn”, explains the president of the University of Strasbourg Michel Deneken. Concretely, the Christmas holidays would be extended by one week without any education and in February, a week of classes would be remotely at home.
The decision worries some students. “We, what scares us is that it falls in January and that we have the partials at that time. Everything will be shifted”indicates one of them. “We are deprived of the ability to study normally like everyone else. At that time, politicians should set an example”, asks another student. This closure will force teachers to stay at home as well. In two years, the University of Strasbourg has seen its expenditure on electricity and heating double from 10 to 20 million euros.
