This is one of the first results of the diplomatic marathon started Thursday in Brussels. The United States will strive to supply Europe with an additional 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year to reduce the continent’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, the American president announced on Friday March 25, Joe Biden, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The two parties also announced the creation of a working group aimed at reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, due to Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Moscow supplies about 150 billion cubic meters of gas each year to the EU, or about 45% of European needs, including about 15 billion m3 of LNG. The European Commission is seeking to reduce European imports of Russian gas by two-thirds this year, and to completely eliminate them “well before 2030”, thanks to reserve filling obligations, energy savings, group purchases of gas and a diversification of suppliers.

As part of the task force announced on Friday, the EU executive will work with member states “with the aim of guaranteeing, at least until 2030, a demand for approximately 50 billion m3 per year of additional American LNG”.
