The United States dropped the equivalent of 38,000 meals in the Gaza Strip on Saturday March 2. Aid which does not, however, compensate for the work of land humanitarian convoys, whose entry into the enclave remains difficult.

The first packages dropped by the Americans were welcomed in Gaza (Palestine) like a gift from heaven: clusters of around twenty parachutes, a drop in the ocean of the enclave’s humanitarian needs. The equivalent of 38,000 meals were distributed on Saturday March 2. Other operations must follow despite the danger. “It is extremely difficult to carry out an airdrop in an environment as populated as Gaza.”said John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council.

At least 1,000 humanitarian vehicles blocked at the border

These air deliveries are also much more expensive. The Americans are considering delivering aid by sea, but this does not compensate for land humanitarian convoys. According to the UN, at least 1,000 vehicles are blocked on the Egyptian side of the border, while famine threatens Gaza. “We need all crossing points into Gaza to be open“, insists Georgios Petropoulos, of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Malnutrition and dehydration particularly affect very young children. Around ten are already dead, according to Palestinian officials.
