US health authorities on Wednesday, August 31 authorized the new version of the Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, which specifically targets the Omicron variant. This new generation of anti-Covid vaccine, called bivalent, targets both the original strain of the coronavirus, and the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the Omicron variant. This last lineage currently represents nearly 90% of contaminations in the United States.

The two updated vaccines are authorized for a booster dose, from the age of 12 for that of Pfizer, and from the age of 18 for that of Moderna, said the American Medicines Agency (FDA) in a press release. “A new wave is expected when we spend more time indoors this fall and winter”, warned at a press conference Robert Califf, the boss of the FDA. He clarified that it was “to anticipate” this increase in contamination.

This authorization aims to contain a new wave of feared contamination this winter. Even if the virus has largely disappeared from the daily lives of Americans, the United States is still currently recording some 80,000 new cases and 400 deaths from Covid-19 each day.
